Traffic Design
StudioWAY specialises in delivering comprehensive traffic design solutions that enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability for road networks across Australia. Our experienced team utilises industry-standard software and best practices to develop innovative designs tailored to the unique needs of each project. We service both private and public sector clients, ensuring that all stakeholders benefit from our expertise.
Our Services
Intersection & Roundabout Design
We provide detailed design solutions for intersections and roundabouts that optimise traffic flow and minimise conflict points. Our designs focus on reducing delays, improving safety, and accommodating all modes of transportation.
Parking & Access Design
Efficient parking and access solutions are key to smooth traffic operations. We design functional car parks, loading zones, and access points that enhance convenience while maintaining optimal traffic movement.
We have significant experience with:
- Ramp design: Including complex arrangements where it is necessary to shorten the length of the ramp and minimise its overall footprint to maximise developable area.
- Click & Collect: We were at the forefront of the ‘Click & Collect’ boom that began in the Covid era, and can assist in designing suitable facilities for efficient and safe customer pickups.
- Boom gates: Including associated swept path testing and queueing assessments.
- Maximising parking yield: We find efficiencies to maximise the number of parking spaces when this is necessary to achieve relevant statutory requirements or client objectives.
- Mechanical parking installations: Including manual and automated car stackers and car lifts.
- License plate recognition: Including associated queueing assessments to ensure optimal traffic throughput.
- Multi-level car parks: Including techniques to maximise the efficiency of vehicle circulation and ensure appropriate segregation of parking areas for different user types.
- Pedestrian improvements: We assist in reconfiguring existing car parks to provide enhanced pedestrian access and safety.
- Loading docks: We are adept at designing or redesigning loading docks and loading facilities to best accommodate heavy vehicle movement while maximising safety to ensure OHS obligations are met.
- Accessible car parking: We are experts in designing and auditing accessible (DDA) car parking spaces. We work closely with accessibility consultants in cases where there may be a need to vary the standard AS2890.6 requirements.
Signage and Linemarking
Clear and effective road markings and signage are essential for guiding drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians safely through road networks. We develop compliant and well-placed signage and pavement marking plans in accordance with Australian regulatory standards.
We can assist established businesses and shopping centres with identifying existing issues of safety and non-compliance in their car parking areas, and then prepare associated signage and linemarking plans.
On and Off-Road Bicycle Facilities
We are adept (and passionate) at designing on and off-road bicycle facilities including bicycle lanes, shared user paths (SUP’s), crossings, and integration into intersections and complex pedestrian environments. We stay abreast of the constantly evolving range of treatment types available to practitioners, but are not afraid to recommend our own ‘out-of-the-box’ ideas for particularly challenging scenarios!
Pedestrian Shared Zones
We assist landscape architects and urban designers in creating well-designed public places that promote pedestrian priority over vehicles, which often includes design of shared zones. This is not as simple as just putting up signs – for it to be truly effective, thought must be given to a range of visual features such as raised pavements, textured surfaces, street furniture and planting.
Traffic Calming Measures (LATM)
To enhance safety in residential and high-pedestrian areas, we design traffic calming measures such as speed humps, kerb extensions, raised pedestrian crossings and other methods to help reduce vehicle speeds and improve liveability and safety.
Temporary Traffic Management Plans
For construction and event-related traffic disruptions, we develop detailed temporary traffic management plans (TMPs) and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs) that ensure safe and efficient traffic movement while minimising impacts on the surrounding community.
Swept Path Assessment
We undertake vehicle swept path assessments using AutoTURN to ensure vehicle manoeuvrability within proposed designs. Our assessments help identify potential design constraints and optimise space utilisation for various vehicle types.
Relevant Standards & Guidelines
We have a comprehensive understanding of relevant standards and guidelines, such as:
- Planning Schemes.
- NSW Development Control Plans (DCPs).
- Australian Standard AS2890 series (Parking Facilities).
- Australian Standard AS1428 series (Design for Access & Mobility).
- Australian Standard AS1742 series (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices).
- Austroads publications.
- Development Plans.
- Precinct Structure Plans (PSPs).
- National Construction Code (NCC).
- Individual Council Requirements (e.g. policies, crossover guidelines).
- Individual State Road Authority Requirements (e.g. DTP technical publications).
- Infrastructure Design Manual (IDM).
